Abstract:
While many properties of vegetative and spore forms of Bacillus have been studied and characterized, very few studies exist on the intrinsic magnetic properties of Bacillus spores. We previously demonstrated that spores of Bacillus atrophaeus, but not vegetative cells, can have significant magnetic susceptibility and that this susceptibility is the result of the presence of Manganese, Mn. In this study we further investigate this magnetic susceptibility in an attempt to understand how this magnetic susceptibility occurs, the oxidation state(s) and location of the Mn, and absolutes amount of these various states of Mn. A number of analytical instrumentation was used including: Cell Tracking Velocimetry, CTV, XPS spectroscopy, and ICP-OES.
